Digital German Gazetteer
New! A digital gazetteer of Germany on CD-ROM.
Includes over 215,000 names of towns, villages, farms, streams, lakes, mountains, hills, and many other geographic features in present-day Germany. This database was obtained from the United States Defense Mapping Agency. The Windows 95/98 software uses a powerful phonetic searching algorithm (modified Daitch-Mokotoff soundex coding) to help you find many places for which you have only an approximate spelling (such as a spelling found in an early church record, or on an American naturalization document).
Features:
Search for only populated places or all places in database. In some cases, the names of small villages that no longer exist, or that have been renamed, will still be found on other local features such as streams, hills, farms, etc.
The program displays the locations of places selected from the list of phonetic matches on a state outline map of Germany. The currently selected place is shown in red, and previously plotted places are shown in green.
Display up to 800 locations on the map at one time. The results of more than one search can be shown on the map at the same time - you can plot the location of a known village, and then plot the locations of other places to see them in relation to the first village.
The map and plotted locations can be printed with a list of the place names, their latitude and longitude, and the type of feature (populated place, hill, etc.).
Screen capture of program finding an incorrectly spelled Stuttgart.
Another example of finding an incorrectly spelled place.
This example shows using all places rather than just populated places.
Another example showing several possibilities for a place named Rohrberg.
This example shows several places plotted at the same time.
Moving the cursor over the state name abbreviation shows the full name.
The CD-ROM is still in the testing phase - the software may still need a little "tweeking" and additional features may be added to the software. The program requires Windows 95 or 98, and a CD-ROM drive to run.
The Digital German Gazetteer is now available ONLY to the first 25 persons willing to beta test the program. The program will be shipped to the beta testers on CD-R disk. The cost to the beta testers will be half price - only $9.00.
